Step 1: Identify Your Central Vacuum Power Unit

Your power unit is usually mounted in a garage, basement, utility room, or mechanical area. Look for a label with the brand and model number.

What to write down
  • Brand (ex: Beam, NuTone, Electrolux, Hayden, CanaVac, Galaxie)
  • Model number
  • Power unit type (bagged vs. bagless/cyclonic)
  • Approx. home size (optional, helps sizing)
Common symptoms (helps diagnosis)
  • Motor runs but suction is weak
  • Vacuum won’t turn on from inlets
  • Smell, sparking, or loud whining
  • Power unit shuts off unexpectedly
Pro tip: If your system is older and the brand label is faded, don’t worry — your inlet type and hose connection are usually enough to find compatible parts.

Step 2: Identify Your Wall Inlet Type

The wall inlet determines whether your hose needs only low-voltage control, or also needs a dedicated power connection for an electric powerhead. Most homes have one of these common inlet styles:

Standard (Low-Voltage) Inlet
  • Most common inlet type
  • Two small metal contacts inside
  • Works with low-voltage, pigtail, and some direct-connect hoses
Electric Inlet (for Powerhead Use)
  • Often has 110/120V built in
  • May include a separate 2-prong power receptacle
  • Supports electric hoses + powered carpet nozzles
Direct-Connect Style Inlet (Less Common)
  • Designed for hoses with built-in direct-connect plug
  • Common in some brands/eras
  • Hose end has visible metal prongs

Step 3: Identify Your Hose Type

Your hose type is the #1 key to ordering the right replacement. Most central vacuum hoses fall into one of these categories:

Low-Voltage Hose
  • Used for suction-only cleaning tools
  • No external power cord
  • Often has a switch on the handle
Electric Hose (Pigtail)
  • Has a power cord (“pigtail”) that plugs into a nearby outlet
  • Used with electric carpet powerheads
  • Common upgrade path
Electric Hose (Direct-Connect)
  • Power is supplied through the inlet
  • Hose end has visible metal prongs
  • Used with direct-connect inlet valves
Fastest match: Use our Hose Compatibility Guide to confirm your connection type. If you can, take a photo of the hose wall-end and the inlet.

Common Questions

Do I need the same brand hose as my power unit?
Usually no. Compatibility depends on inlet type and hose connection, not the power unit brand. Use our hose compatibility guide to confirm.
How do I know if I have a powered (electric) setup?
If you use an electric carpet powerhead and your hose has a power cord (pigtail) or visible metal prongs (direct-connect), you have an electric setup.
My vacuum runs but suction is weak — what’s the most common cause?
The most common causes are a clog, a full canister/bag, filter restriction, or a system air leak. See the troubleshooting guide for a step-by-step checklist.
Can you help me identify parts if I send photos?
Yes. Send photos of your inlet and the hose wall-end, plus (if possible) your power unit label. Contact us here →
